Arsenal 3-0 Coventry: Kai Havertz, Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard fire Gunners to dominant Premier League win on opening night

Arsenal made a flying start to their Premier League title defence with a 3-0 thumping of newly-promoted Coventry City in the season opener at the Emirates Stadium.

The Gunners showed their readiness to go again with an impressive demolition of Man City in the Community Shield last weekend and they sent another statement to their rivals for the crown with this demonstration of dominance.

Once again new signing Christos Tzolis shone. The Greece international notched two assists at the Principality Stadium and was involved in Arsenal's first two goals on his Premier League debut, first winning the ball back for Riccardo Calafiori to tee up Kai Havertz and then sending in the cross Coventry 'keeper Carl Rushworth diverted into Bukayo Saka's path. "What a left-winger Arsenal have got," purred Your Site' Jamie Carragher on co-commentary.

This was a reality check for Coventry on their return to the top flight after 25 years away. They failed to make a tackle in the first half - they could not get near Mikel Arteta's men. It did not get much better for them after the interval, with Martin Odegaard's miscued finish adding a third for Arsenal just four minutes into the second period.

With Ben White, Saka and Odegaard combining brilliantly through the right channel, Tzolis electric on the left, and Havertz looking sharp ahead of some slick midfield play from Declan Rice and Myles Lewis-Skelly, Arsenal already look up to speed and formidable.

Their defence was barely tested but Ezri Konsa's pre-match welcome, following his ÂŁ55m move from Aston Villa, was a reminder they have brought even greater strength and depth to that department, too. Tougher tests are to come, with Aston Villa away and Chelsea at home next on the fixture list, but Arsenal are going to take some stopping.

Coventry, meanwhile, will be relieved they do not have to face Arsenal again until April. They host Hull City next weekend in a fixture which will carry far more significance for their season.

5: SHOT! Tzolis shoots over after cutting inside from the left flank.

7: OVER! Saka's shot is deflected over after Tzolis pops up on the right.

8: CLOSE! Tzolis is involved in everything Arsenal do in attack but sends his second shot of the game over after a well-worked short corner.

9: OVER! Declan Rice shoots over from 25 yards as Arsenal make a fast start.

15: GOAL! Tzolis wins the ball off Milan van Ewijk deep in Coventry territory, Calafiori crosses low for Havertz and the striker sweeps in a fine finish to give the Gunners the lead.

23: GOAL! Rice and Odegaard combine in midfield and Saka is perfectly placed to tuck in when Tzolis' cross is diverted into his path by Coventry 'keeper Rushworth.

34: CHANCE! Arsenal work the ball into the Coventry box and White is onto it but sees his shot blocked away. Coventry scrambling.

43: SHOT! Loum Tchaouna's overhead kick from the edge of the box loops onto the roof of the Arsenal net.

45+1: CLOSE! Rice whips a shot beyond the far post after another short corner.

49: GOAL! Odegaard, Saka and White combine through the right channel before the captain's miscued shot deceives Rushworth and adds Arsenal's third.

53: SAVE! Rushworth tips a curling effort from Lewis-Skelly over the bar for a corner as Arsenal keep their pedal to the metal.

66: SHOT! Tzolis stings Rushworth's palms with a drive from the edge of the box from an Arsenal corner.

90: SAVE! Rushworth is at full stretch to prevent Havertz arrowing in a fourth after some neat footwork from the Arsenal striker.

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta to Your Site:

"There was a lot to like. We were really dominant and flowed with the ball, connecting well with one another. We should have scored more goals.

"Overall the performance was positive with some big individual performances.

"When you talk about connection and chemistry those three [Saka, Odegaard and White] have that. They play so many minutes together in the past but they didn't play much last year due to different situations. Even on the left side with Tzolis you are seeing different dynamics. I was really impressed."

Your Site' Jamie Carragher:

"We'll know in a few weeks if there is a little bit of swagger about them or whether it was just the case they were playing against a team that were not used to that level. But Arsenal showed their class."

Martin Odegaard speaking to Your Site:

"The first game is always a bit nervy. They played well, gave us a good fight and a good battle. Was key to get the first goal and control the game. It was solid.

"We looked good. We could have created and scored more. We can be more precise and sharp around the box. It's a good performance but we can do even better.

"The quality in the squad is unbelievable. You can put anyone on the pitch and they can perform at the highest level. We push one another to get better."

Coventry boss Frank Lampard:

"I didn't mind the reaction towards the end of the game as we went on. I saw some okay things there. It was a big learning curve, I believe they kept going, they kept going much to the end.

"There's Premier League debuts, there's noise here, I remember that [as a player]. It's different to the Championship in a way, no matter where you go.

"So those things are things to handle as a player, and we talked about a lot before the game. They'll have to go through that and experience that."

Sheldon: Quality of Tzolis!! I know it's a first game back but if he continues like that ÂŁ34m looks like a bargain, great first performance from the champions COYG!!

Reeze: Arsenal will walk the league this year, even without adding another forward. Problem is, they probably will add another!

Craig: Arsenal looked good and comfortable and never really had to break sweat but I thought Coventry were very, very poor, the goalkeeper has thrown one in and gifted them another. Tonight won't define their season but they are going to have to be much, much better.

Combo: Arsenal played well but Coventry don't look great so it's hard to judge it. We got the goals at decent times and controlled basically everything in the game. Probably could have gotten more but good start to the season. And for Coventry, it will be a real battle this season.

Luca Hill: Tzolis is Arsenal's Kvaratskhelia. A new, underestimated, diamond to the crown.
