Ben Stokes: Former England captain hits Durham hundred in first match after international retirement

Former England captain Ben Stokes hit a match-winning hundred in his first appearance for Durham following his international retirement.

Stokes struck an unbeaten 108 off 123 balls, hitting 10 boundaries and three sixes, and suffered from cramp at the back end of his innings as Durham chased down 257 to beat Derbyshire by five wickets in the Metro Bank One-Day Cup.

It was Stokes' 10th List A century, and first for Durham since 2014, coming less than a month after he announced his retirement from England duty during the series-ending Test defeat to New Zealand at Trent Bridge.

Martin Andersson has top-scored for Derbyshire with 112 in their total of 256-9 after electing to bat first, Stokes (0-38) going wicketless from his nine overs with the ball.

He then arrived at the crease with Durham in trouble at 24-2 in the ninth over of their reply, but 50 stands with each of Will Rhodes (45), Colin Ackermann (28) and Ollie Robinson (23) helped push Durham towards their victory target.

When Stokes edged Nick Potts for four to reach his half century, he subsequently received treatment on his left leg, with Durham later confirming the issue was cramp.

Although restricted, Stokes smacked his former England team-mate Shoaib Bashir (1-56) for two sixes on his way through to a 116-ball hundred, with victory secured off the first ball of the final over of the match.
