Aston Villa produced one of the worst opening 45 minutes in Premier League history on their way to a heavy 4-0 defeat at Brighton.
Unai Emery's side, who were without a recognised centre forward with Ollie Watkins left out of the squad amid interest from Saudi club Al Hilal, conceded FOUR goals in an extraordinary 31 minutes of football before Joao Gomes capped a nightmare Villa league debut by being shown a straight red card just before the interval.
It all came after a bright start from Emery's side with Emi Buendia, who was playing as Villa's most advanced forward, having three efforts on goal inside the first 10 minutes, but that was where any hope ended for the visitors as Brighton went on to run riot in the first half.
Maxim De Cuyper latched onto Pau Torres' poor pass before squeezing his shot in via the post and Victor Lindelof as Brighton took the lead through an own goal.
De Cuyper then got himself on the scoresheet 10 minutes later after converting Georginio Rutter's cross before Jack Hinshelwood's quickfire double (30, 31) sent Brighton to dreamland.
Villa's first-half collapse was complete five minutes before the break as new signing Gomes, who had already been booked, was sent off after a VAR review for a kick out at Rutter.
It capped a first half to forget for both Gomes and Villa, but Emery's side managed to stem the flow of goals in the second half, limiting the damage of what proved to be a costly first-half collapse.
But after a turbulent summer at Villa Park, which has seen key players Morgan Rogers, Youri Tielemans, Ezri Konsa and Lucas Digne leave the club, this is a damaging opening defeat for Villa, leaving plenty of questions for Emery to answer with just over a week left of the summer transfer window.

Jake: I thought Aston Villa were in for a slow start but not to this extent. The recruitment has been shocking. You don't sell your best players and expect to be fine.

"The only positive Aston Villa can take from this is they didn't concede a goal in the second half.
"However, it was a frustrating afternoon for Unai Emery. He will now just want some certainty over who will be at the football club come the end of the transfer window.
"It must be so difficult for him, at the moment because the transfer window is all he is being asked about. It's a big distraction for Aston Villa."

"We started the first 10-15 minutes very well. Then I can't understand exactly why we lost in 20 minutes all the match and a player.
"But this is the process we have. We know football is not easy, we know four years working here in Villa we have to work in difficult moments as well. Always we recover a good moment. Always came back, with the situation maybe like we have now.
"The response on the field in the second half, I'm really happy.
"The players they didn't give up, they worked it, showed good commitment and kept going."
Aston Villa captain John McGinn to Your Site:
"We started the game very well. Had the chance to go ahead with Emi [Buendia]. We were the ones to create the chances. But playing at the highest level, when you make a mistake, they happen. The goals we concded were poor, there's no getting away from that.
"Going away in the Premier League, we obviously apologise to the supporters, it's not easy to travel, costs a lot of money, takes a lot of time. And they don't want to come here and see their team lose by four goals before half-time. But on the flipside, 4-0 down at the Amex with 10 men, we had to stand up in the second half and the squad of players in there, we had a chance to puff our chests out, be men and fight and we did that.
"We're obviously angry and disappointed at the result. We set high standards and that's far away from that. However, there's a bit of me that's proud at how we reacted. Today could easily have got away from us and got messy. A lot of pride in the second-half performance. After five games last season, we had one point. Hopefully this season can go the same way as that."
Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler:

"The first minutes we struggled a little bit. But then more and more we got the control of the game back. We scored some nice goals. The first goal with some luck. But we scored some nice goals that helped our game, the intensity. The red card was a gamechanger but all the goals we scored were 11 v 11.
"The second half we were quite serious. We had the ball, controlled the game, didn't give away the ball too easy and created some chances. Quite a mature performance.
"It's always helpful to win games. But it was only one game. A good start. Now we have another big challenge ahead of us on Thursday."
