South Africa's Casandra Alexander claimed victory at a weather affected KPMG Irish Open with a dominant performance across a sodden week in County Kildare.
A five-time runner-up this season, the Ladies European Tour's leading player finally broke her duck with a wire-to-wire victory, highlighted by a course-record 63 on day one at The K Club's Palmer South Course.
Alexander birdied three of her first four holes and rarely looked back, finishing 20-under par and three shots clear of runner-up Sara Kouskova of Czechia, with Finland's Noora Komulainen a shot further back.
Leona Maguire finished as the leading Irish player, five shots off the pace in fourth place, on a week where a record number Irish players featured – nine professionals and seven amateurs, comprising the strongest home representation in the tournament's history.
The week was a battle with the weather from the outset, with Saturday's third round halted for 45 minutes by heavy rain sweeping across the Palmer South Course, while the closing par-five was shortened for Sunday's final round.
For a few minutes on the final day, the coronation itself threatened to stall as Alexander dropped shots at each of her opening two holes - her first real hint of vulnerability all week. But any fears of a collapse were quickly extinguished by three consecutive birdies from the fifth, rebuilding her cushion and restoring control as she marched towards a triumph that had felt a long time coming.
"This one is really special," Alexander said. "One, it's a special event, and two, I almost feel like the second one is as important as the first one because it's not a fluke!
"I can't wait to get home and celebrate with friends and family. The Order of Merit is goal No 1, and the best way to win the Order of Merit is to win golf tournaments."
Maguire, meanwhile, had started the final round seven shots adrift but carried the momentum of a 63 of her own - featuring nine birdies and not a single dropped shot, completed before the worst of the rain arrived on Saturday. She got the home crowd going on Sunday with four birdies in five holes either side of the turn, reaching 15 under.
Sadly for the 31-year-old, though, that surge was followed by six straight pars and a dropped shot at the short 17th before she signed off with a birdie at the shortened par-five last.
Her eventual fourth-place finish matches the Cavan golfer's best result in her national open, which she also achieved at Dromoland Castle in 2022.
"It's been a great week," Maguire said. "The crowds have been fantastic, rain, hail or shine. I think it's another very successful Irish Open in the books and the fans really made it this week.
"Nice to get a couple of low ones over the weekend. Friday was the one that got away but overall, 15 under par is a very solid week's effort and nice to be able to give the home fans something to cheer about."
The timing could scarcely be better for Maguire, whose place at next month's Solheim Cup came as one of Anna Nordqvist's captain's picks at a time when she had missed the cut in four of this year's five majors and gone two years without a win. A home top-five, built on a strong weekend, suggests her form is beginning to click at exactly the right time.
The 31-year-old's Solheim Cup record stands at 8-3-1 across three appearances, and she top-scored as an unbeaten rookie in Europe's 2021 victory. That pedigree made her the only experienced name among Nordqvist's four picks, with Spain's Julia Lopez Ramirez, France's Nastasia Nadaud and England's Mimi Rhodes all set to make their debuts.
The LPGA Tour and Ladies European Tour both have a week off ahead of the 20th edition of the Solheim Cup, held at Bernardus Golf in the Netherlands, where Team Europe look to regain the trophy from Team USA.
The opening ceremony is live on Thursday September 10 from 4pm on Your Site+, ahead of round-the-clock coverage from all three days of the biennial contest on Your Site Golf.
