Iconic rugby league player Sir Billy Boston has died aged 92.
Back in June 2025, Boston received rugby league's first ever knighthood, ending a 130-year wait for such an honour.
A statement released by Wales Rugby League said: "Today, rugby league has lost one of its greatest-ever players, Wales has lost one of its finest sporting sons, and our sport has lost a truly special gentleman."
The Welsh Rugby Union confirmed his death in a statement, saying: "Sir Billy Boston, one of the best loved and most iconic figures in the history of Welsh sport, has passed away peacefully at the age of 92."
Boston blazed a trail for Black sports stars during the 1950s and 1960s, making 488 appearances for Wigan and finishing his career with a British-record 571 tries.
He also became the first non-white player to represent Great Britain on a Lions tour in 1954, scoring 36 tries in 18 appearances in Australia and New Zealand, and featuring in a total of 31 international Test matches.
Boston made a try-scoring debut for Wigan against Barrow in November 1953, and by the time he left the club in 1968, he had played in six Challenge Cup finals at Wembley, featuring on the winning side in 1958, 1959 and 1965.
Prime Minister Andy Burnham, an avid follower of the sport, led the tributes to Boston.
Burnham wrote on X: "Heartbroken to hear my friend Sir Billy Boston has died.
"Billy was one of the greatest rugby league players of all time but also one of the kindest and most down-to-earth people you could ever wish to meet.
"He always had time for people and gave so much to back to his adopted home, Wigan.
"I will miss him greatly and am thinking today of Billy's family, still grieving the recent loss of his beloved wife Joan.
"A giant of a man in every way. Thank you, Billy, and rest in peace."
Wigan have indicated they will pay tribute to Boston prior to their next Super League match against Hull KR on Thursday.
Wigan head coach Matt Peet said: "On behalf of myself, our coaching staff and players, from the first team through to our academy, we send our deepest condolences to Sir Billy's family, friends and loved ones at this incredibly sad time.
"Billy Boston is woven into the fabric of this club. Every day we walk through the doors, we're reminded that we have a responsibility to represent all those who have gone before us and made Wigan Warriors what it is today. Billy stands at the very top of that history.
"Those fortunate enough to have seen him play tell me he was simply the greatest. His achievements, the man he was and the standards he set will continue to inspire everyone who pulls on this shirt.
"His legacy goes far beyond records and trophies. His impact on Wigan, on rugby league and on the wider sporting world was recognised at the very highest level. We will do everything we can to honour his memory by representing this club with the pride, humility and excellence that he embodied.
"Sir Billy Boston will always be one of Wigan Warriors' greatest sons, and he will never be forgotten."

"I have listened to the hardest of rugby league men from Billy's era talk about his presence on the field. The hulking figure they dare not get angry.
"A sensational try scorer who could handle himself if and when the game got physical. Thanks for everything you gave people Billy."
On August 6 1934 in Cardiff, Billy Boston was born to his father John, a seaman from Sierra Leone and his mother Nellie, from the city's Irish community.
Primarily a winger and centre, Boston's rugby career began in the 15-player code in which he represented Wales at youth level.
However, it was not without its struggles. His hometown club Cardiff RFC did not offer him and other Black and mixed-race players a contract.
Such racism also denied him the opportunity to represent Wales and with it, he made the decision to switch codes and join Wigan Warriors.
At 18 years of age in March 1953, Boston signed for Wigan before making his debut eight months later. That would be the first of 488 and crossing the whitewash became customary as he scored 478 tries across that time.
In 1954 more history followed when Boston became the first non-white player to be selected for a Great Britain Rugby League Lions Tour.
Boston became a World Cup winner in 1960, scoring a try in Great Britain's win over Australia and then a second Lions Tour followed in 1962.
His international career saw him score 24 tries across 31 Tests for Great Britain. His other Tour appearances added a remarkable 53 tries in 27 games.
After 16 years with Wigan, Boston joined Blackpool Borough and made 11 appearances and scored five tries, ending his domestic career with 499 appearances.
Boston's career ended at 36 years of age and the statistics are staggering. He scored 571 tries, the second most in rugby league history.
A rugby league immortal, he has three statues - situated in Wales, Wigan, and at Wembley Stadium.
