Scottie Scheffler came through a final-round tussle with Viktor Hovland to cap off another PGA Tour season in style with FedExCup glory at the Tour Championship.
Scheffler overturned a three-shot deficit during an eventful Sunday at East Lake Golf Club, where he mixed six birdies with two bogeys to post a four-under 66 and pull clear of the field.
The world No 1 finished on 16 under and three strokes clear of Hovland, who led at various points on the final day, with Scheffler claiming the $10m first prize and joining Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods as the only multiple FedExCup champions.
Hovland posted a final-round 72 to finish second ahead of Ryan Gerard, with Rory McIlroy recovering from three bogeys in his first five holes to post a one-under 69 and share fourth spot.
McIlroy was joined on 11 under by Ludvig Ã…berg, Chris Gotterup, Russell Henley, Jacob Bridgeman, first-round leader Min Woo Lee and England's Alex Fitzpatrick, with defending champion Tommy Fleetwood a further shot behind.
Scheffler made an early statement by firing his tee-shot to tap-in range at the second, which lifted him within one when Hovland had to lay up from the rough at the first and opened with a bogey.
Overnight co-leader Gerard started with a double-bogey and never returned to the top of the leaderboard, as Scheffler drained a 24-foot birdie at the fourth to pull level with Hovland on 14 under.
Scheffler saved par from eight feet at the fifth but failed to take advantage of the par-five next, then cancelled out a poor approach into the seventh - resulting in a first bogey in 25 holes - by making a seven-foot birdie at the eighth.
Hovland fired a close-range birdie at the eighth to briefly reclaim the outright advantage on 15 under, only for Scheffler - playing two groups ahead - to start his back nine with a birdie and add another from five feet at the 13th to move ahead again.
The pair found themselves tied at the top when Scheffler missed the fairway off the 14th tee and made bogey, as Gotterup burned a 10-foot chance to get within one, but Hovland dropped a shot on the 13th to slip one behind with five to play.
Hovland produced a superb up and down from the 14th fairway to stay on 14 under, as Scheffler took control by recovering from finding a bunker off the 16th tee to make a 12-foot birdie and double his lead.
Scheffler two-putted the 17th and recovered from being forced to lay up to safely par the last, which was enough to close out a third PGA Tour win of the season and second of the FedExCup Playoffs.
His latest success sees him pass Woods in all-time career money earnings on the PGA Tour, while his 22 PGA Tour titles over the last five seasons is double any other player during that period.
"Today was a day I was fortunate to get off to a good start and was able to make some birdies late in the round to seal the deal," Scheffler said. "I'm very proud of fighting back and having some good finishes and even giving myself some chances to win with some of those poor starts."
Hovland and Gerard only found two birdies between them in the final group, seeing them fall short, with Fitzpatrick and Xander Schauffele the only players to match Scheffler's final-round 66.
"I don't think he [Scheffler] is trying to do too much with it," Hovland said. "He knows that he's got an edge on most guys out here, so he doesn't have to do anything crazy. He can play smart and just kind of pick his spots, stay in it constantly.
"It wasn't like anybody else really played all that great in contention. That's what you see - a lot of guys just gagging and throwing up. That's where he just stays in it and shoots a nice score and that gets the job done."
Woods was quick to praise Scheffler's impressive campaign, where he added five-runner-up finishes to his three wins. The 15-time major champion said: "Those are some numbers to be proud of. Incredible consistency all season long. Congrats on a historic season, Scottie."
The PGA Tour takes two weeks off before starting its FedExCup Fall schedule with the inaugural Biltmore Championship from September 17-20, held in Asheville, North Carolina.
Team USA will look to continue their Presidents Cup dominance a week later when they host the International Team at Medinah, having won the last 10 editions of the biennial contest. or .
