Speaking to reporters ahead of Sheffield Uniteds game at home to Bolton Wanderers, boss Chris Wilder said: Yeah, there's been a bid put in by Wrexham. So that's with Steve (Bettis, CEO) and the owners.

So, he's a good player. I'm not surprised there's been interest. For me personally, I wouldn't want him to go. But I understand that there's a bid in, and it'll be dealt with with the certain people that deal with these things.

This is not a criticism but I think Wrexham are in for half of the division as well. So, they've done business and that's their prerogative and what they need to do. But I know that there have been bids in on other players from that football club, in that position, as well.

So, maybe a bit of blanket bombing in that position and see what comes up. It's not a done deal. If that changes, then that changes. But I know they've been in for a number of players, which is, as I said, what they can do at this particular situation and point of the window. And Callum's one of them.

He understands that he's got a job to do, to play for the football club, and he's a Sheff United player. He's under contract for us. So get on with your job and prepare as professionally as he has done. Theres a reason why is he's our player of the year and he's done well here for me and for the football club.

There are some players who you know their heads will be turned and its going to be a struggle.

But Cals mentality is first class. He wants to play for the football club. He's head down and carrying on. So absolutely no problem. You have to address it because you have to speak to him and talk him through where it's at, but Callum's been first class for me right the way through.

He was a fantastic free transfer for us. He played a big part in the first season and last year was our club player of the year. So when you get voted that, I think youre consistent with your performances.

But you're consistent with your attitude as well. He's a good player and, as a football club, we don't want to lose good players.

Aston Villa boss Unai Emery says his overhauled squad have to hit the ground running. 

Villa's Europa League winning team has been ripped apart this summer as Emi Martinez Ezri Konsa, Morgan Rogers, Emiliano Martinez, Youri Tielemans, Lucas Digne and Ollie Watkins have all left. 

Nicolas Jackson, Leon Goretzka, Johan Manzambi and Alejandro Garnacho are among those who have arrived and Emery needs his new men to bed in quickly after Villa lost their Premier League opener 4-0 at Brighton.

"In football, if you are expecting transition, maybe you are not in the right way," Emery said. 

"We must compete, we must win. We have to rebuild the team as fast as possible; we have to accept our way, our decisions, and why we are taking some decisions, but I am positive, and we are working. 

"At the same time, rebuilding the team with the players, they can understand how we want to play, and trying to give some necessary time for some players to adapt to us. 

"Of course, some players, they will need more time than others, and the players, they are with us for a long time.

Argentina's Lionel Messi has announced his retirement from international football. 

The 39-year-old played his final match for his country in the 2026 World Cup final, when Argentina lost to Spain.

Shortly after, his father, Jorge, passed away after a long illness. 

The former Barcelona and PSG forward added he wrote a statement two days after the final, but following the death of his father, it convinced him further to retire from international duty.

In a statement on Instagram, Messi wrote: "After the time that has passed since the final, and after giving it a lot of thought, I want to let everyone know that I am retiring from the national team...

"It was a decision that hurt - and still hurts deep down - but I understand that the time has come. I swear to you that I always gave it my all - not just in these last few years when we won everything, but before that too; I always fought and left everything on the field for this jersey, to bring you joy and make you feel proud to be Argentine through football.

"Time is running short, chapters come to a close, and this is one that hurts me deeply. I love, have loved, and will always love being part of the national team. Ive given everything I had; I have nothing left to give, and besides, there are some great young players coming up who deserve to be here.

"Thank you for all the affection over these past 20 years. I will miss hearing you from the pitch so much. Now Ill be just one of you, cheering and supporting from the outside (through the good times and the badespecially the bad).

It has been some impact for Will Lankshear at Middlesbrough. Six goals in five games so far, including four in the Championship.

Lankshear has endeared himself to the Boro fans very quickly. A month since his arrival and he is a favourite at the Riverside.

Naturally, his scoring run since joining Boro has led to some comparisons with Harry Kane - who also began his career on loan in the Championship from Spurs, just as Lankshear did at Oxford last season.

Lankshear is quick to play down the talk.

It's a massive compliment, obviously, he said. What Harry Kane has done is unbelievable and I've not even come close to what he's achieved.
