Aston Villa boss Unai Emery says his overhauled squad have to hit the ground running. 

Villa's Europa League winning team has been ripped apart this summer as Emi Martinez Ezri Konsa, Morgan Rogers, Emiliano Martinez, Youri Tielemans, Lucas Digne and Ollie Watkins have all left. 

Nicolas Jackson, Leon Goretzka, Johan Manzambi and Alejandro Garnacho are among those who have arrived and Emery needs his new men to bed in quickly after Villa lost their Premier League opener 4-0 at Brighton.

"In football, if you are expecting transition, maybe you are not in the right way," Emery said. 

"We must compete, we must win. We have to rebuild the team as fast as possible; we have to accept our way, our decisions, and why we are taking some decisions, but I am positive, and we are working. 

"At the same time, rebuilding the team with the players, they can understand how we want to play, and trying to give some necessary time for some players to adapt to us. 

"Of course, some players, they will need more time than others, and the players, they are with us for a long time. 

"They must compete now, strong, and of course with all the ideas we were building, and trying to adapt the new players as fast as possible. 

"For example, last week, we played with 10 players - they were here last year. The only player that was not, was Joao Gomes. This is the objective. 

"Of course, we didn't perform, we didn't compete, and we must do everything faster, and the next challenge is on Monday, and the Premier League is not waiting. 

"There are 38 matches to play, points to play for. We have lost the first match with those three points, and Monday, hopefully, Villa Park is like how we always felt there - supporting, playing with us, and we will need them again." 

Argentina's Lionel Messi has announced his retirement from international football. 

The 39-year-old played his final match for his country in the 2026 World Cup final, when Argentina lost to Spain.

Shortly after, his father, Jorge, passed away after a long illness. 

The former Barcelona and PSG forward added he wrote a statement two days after the final, but following the death of his father, it convinced him further to retire from international duty.

In a statement on Instagram, Messi wrote: "After the time that has passed since the final, and after giving it a lot of thought, I want to let everyone know that I am retiring from the national team...

"It was a decision that hurt - and still hurts deep down - but I understand that the time has come. I swear to you that I always gave it my all - not just in these last few years when we won everything, but before that too; I always fought and left everything on the field for this jersey, to bring you joy and make you feel proud to be Argentine through football.

"Time is running short, chapters come to a close, and this is one that hurts me deeply. I love, have loved, and will always love being part of the national team. Ive given everything I had; I have nothing left to give, and besides, there are some great young players coming up who deserve to be here.

"Thank you for all the affection over these past 20 years. I will miss hearing you from the pitch so much. Now Ill be just one of you, cheering and supporting from the outside (through the good times and the badespecially the bad).

"Thank you to my family for always being there, for accompanying me on this journeyso beautiful, yet so difficult. Thank you to every coach, teammate, and official Ive shared this path with. I take with me unforgettable memories and moments.

"I leave with the peace of mind and pride of having given you -alongside my teammates - moments we once only dreamed of. It was an incredible experience to live this with you all. I love you!

"Thank you God for making me Argentine. Let's go, Argentina!

It has been some impact for Will Lankshear at Middlesbrough. Six goals in five games so far, including four in the Championship.

Lankshear, 21, left Tottenham in the summer after four years there, scoring in the Europa League in the season they won the competition.

Naturally, his scoring run since joining Boro has led to some comparisons with Harry Kane - who also began his career on loan in the Championship from Spurs, just as Lankshear did at Oxford last season.

Lankshear is quick to play down the talk.

It's a massive compliment, obviously, he said. What Harry Kane has done is unbelievable and I've not even come close to what he's achieved.

I have so much love for Spurs and what they've done for me. To be able to get this sort of move as a young player is great, so I'm really proud to be here.
